OBTAINING A MARRIAGE LICENSE

You may obtain a marriage license in Grayson County at the following location(s):

You do not need to bring witnesses to obtain a marriage license.

There is no blood test required.

Applicants must present a VALID Government-issued picture ID.

A marriage license purchased in Grayson County is valid in every county in the state of Texas.  Licenses purchased in Grayson County must be filed in Grayson County after the ceremony is conducted. 

You must be 18 years of age to apply for a Marriage License.

Underage Marriage License Applicants: Effective September 1, 2017.
A county clerk may not issue a marriage license if either applicant is under 18 and has not presented a court order filed with this state that removes the disabilities of minority. SB 1705 amends Section 2.009 of the Texas Family Code, so that a county clerk may not issue a license if either applicant is under 18 years of age and has not presented a court order granted by this state under TFC Chapter 31 removing the disabilities of minority of the  applicant for general purpose; or, if the applicant is a nonresident minor, a certified copy of an order removing the disabilities of minority of the applicant for general purposes filed with this state under TFC §31.007.

Couples must wait 72 hours after purchasing their license before a marriage ceremony can be performed. The license will expire if unused by the 90th day after purchase.  If the license expires, a couple must purchase a new license. 

Effective September 1, 2013, marriage by proxy will only be available to members of the US Armed Services stationed in another country in support of combat or another military operation and unable to attend the ceremony.  See Absent Applicant form and instructions located in the Forms section.

An Informal Marriage License is available to couples. Social Security and some insurance companies do not recognize this document for marriage purposes.

OBTAINING A COPY OF A MARRIAGE LICENSE

Licenses purchased in other counties are not available.  Please contact the county where the license was purchased.  You may also visit the Texas Department of State Health Services website to view a free Marriage License Index for the whole state of Texas page: http://www.dshs.texas.gov/vs/marriagedivorce/mindex.shtm.    

If you are obtaining a certified copy, you will need to provide the following information:
    • Full Name of Applicant 1 / Groom
    • Full Name of Applicant 2 / Bride
    • The Date of the Marriage
